Quote of the Week On Sin
“Jesus said things like, “I tell you the truth, everyone who lives in sin is a slave to sin.” He talks about weeding out “everything that causes sin and all who do evil.” In fact, I hate that term sin. So archaic. So direct.
I hate the fact that Christianity lays out standards and principles by which to weigh my sense of morality. It speaks of sin as missing the mark and doing something I know to be wrong. I can’t ignore this, though everything in me wants to shout, JUST LEAVE ME ALONE!”
-from the chapter on sin in my book.

No worries. I enjoy the dialogue.
If you are asking if I am a moral relativist? I am not. I believe truth can be known–there is right and wrong.
For me, the Bible contains what you describe. But is more than that. To me, it is a record of God’s interactions with humanity as he brings about redemption. Perhaps I am splitting hairs (although I have none to split, being bald and all).
Also, please keep in mind these are a few sentences, from a couple paragraphs, in a sub-section, in a chapter, in a book. It is not the full context. It is meant to peak the curiosity. I guess it worked.
I hope you’ll read the rest. I am confident you’ll understand my context and enjoy it.
Strong views! But I am a bit confused, you say, “I hate the fact that Christianity lays out standards and principles by which to weigh my sense of morality”…. Isn’t THAT in fact what all religions represent? A base or foundation of beliefs, faith and moral standards and expectations? Take for example, the Bible. I mean, sure the stories of burning bushes, miracles and crucifictions spice it up a bunch, but isn’t the ultimate purpose to develop, guide and nuture who we are spiritually and morally? I don’t mean to sound like I’m attacking you or your thoughts, but, for the most part, I “get” your message and feel very similarly to you on many of the issues. However, this thought confuses me a bit. What are your beliefs or expectations on religion’s role, in the development and guidance/maintenance of the believer’s conscience and soul????
