Well, thankfully the political whirlwind will tone down a little in less than a week. Basically, the way I see it is that I just want it to be over. Do I have to brace for communism-lite or socialism-lite based on whoever wins? I know those are hot-button terms, but that’s how I see it.

Then again, maybe they’re not. I wonder how many young adults can even define the terms socialism or communism today. Those views have become so fashionable, especially in public school, universities, media, and universities. That’s pretty scary. If you don’t know the true history of stuff, you are doomed to repeat it. They are not ‘cool’ or ‘hip’. Take it from the son of a Swede.

But I am not particularly excited about either presidential candidate.

Why?

Because neither one represents my views, the views I believe to be the founding principles of this country, well. Most of my values are conservative in nature.

But what does it mean to have conservative values? Here are some things that I’ve put together (with the help of some friends that communicate better than me). It is not comprehensive. But here are a few important things to me:

I believe in personal freedom and individual liberty. Let me make
my own decisions. I have a right to succeed and not be penalized for
it. I have a right to fail and not be ‘bailed out’ so I can learn from it. I must learn from it. Because without the threat of failure, there can be not true success. And if we are all saved and spared from such pain, disappointment, and discomfort we can never achieve our full potential or realize our biggest dreams.

I have a right to manage my
family. That means I have the right to discipline my family in the way I see fit, as
long as it is not criminal.

I have the right
to worship God, the God of my understanding,
and I do not have the right to jam my version of God down anybody
else’s throat or even my version of no God down anybody’s throat.  I believe in letting people live and let live.

I believe in the smallest amount of
government possible you can get away with without anarchy. Big enough to protect these freedoms for each individual. But small enough not to infringe on them.

I believe that entities-be they government, business, ministry, organizations etc.-that are not volitionally conservative in mission and strategy, will become more liberal by default. Because that is human nature-to do more, want more, and control more-until there is no room for the freedom that founded every good and successful idea. And I believe when the government falls into this non-conservative cycle, it is the worst of all evils.

There is a glimpse of my conservative values. And they are not represented well in this election.

So, once again, I will hold my nose and vote for the lesser of two evils.
